Greaves was once at a book-signing close where my mum lived. My mum was with my young niece at the time, and in the book store. She had a long chat with him about Dagenham and east London, and then he offered to sign my niece's new Barbie book!

"There you go, little lady. It's got absolutely nothing to do with my football career. But that will confound memorabilia collectors in years to come..."

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
Don't know whether he was England's best ever striker, but he was certainly the best goalscorer England ever produced.

I guess the difference is exactly that highlighted by Alf Ramsey, which was about what he did, or didn't do, away from the final third of the pitch. You got little from him there, unlike the hard yards and coverage you also got from Hurst etc.

But what a fucking finisher - never been a better England striker in and around the box. Burst to life when in sight of the posts and nobody could match him. Selfish as anybody I've ever seen, but for good reason.

Sad loss. I met him a few times and he was a gent.

Here's a Saint and Greavsie show from 1989. Still a good watch, with some West Ham in there as well.

Always remember going, as a 7 year old, with my Dad to his home debut V Liverpool in March 1970. Memorable for him hitting the roof of the stand with a wayward shot. By then he was past his prime and always think Spurs had a better deal with Martin Peters going the other way. Still a legend though.

One of the saddest sights i saw was about 20 years ago.... down Southend we had a visit from The Suns fun buses... one had page 3 girls you could get your photo done with... which had a massive queue... and the other had Jimmy Greaves... who had a couple of old boys having a chat with him.... didnt seem right.

Probably England’s greatest striker in my opinion.

He only came to West Ham for one final pay day and to play with his mate Moore but don’t blame him for that.

Always loved a bit of Saint & Greavesie

RIP legend.

He never even looked at me the miserable bustard.

Some of you should read his original autobiography "This one's on Me", gives West Ham a total panning, saw us as an amatuer club.

Pours scorn on The Acadamy of Football bullshit.

When I first started going West Ham as a schoolboy, I always watched Saint and Greavsie before heading to the match. Sad news.

Sold - Not surprised your old was choked up, Greavsie meant a lot to a lot of people of that generation. As mentioned, he was known as 'the great Jimmy Greaves' which says it all. A sad day.

R.I.P. Jimmy. Good buddy to Bobby and I managed to see him play for us a couple of times.

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
I don’t think that is correct, muskie. He had plenty of good things to say about West Ham. His anger at Greenwood probably had a lot to do with the Blackpool controversy.

RIP Greavesie

When Greaves was at West Ham a mate of mine used to have a regular lunchtime drink with him in the Slaters on the Romford Road. My mate had broken his leg and then nearest pub to limp to was the Slaters and it was also very close to the Chadwell Heath training ground!
